Madam Barbara Dowuona: From Diagnosis to Survivor Advocacy
Her journey reminds us that breast cancer awareness must go beyond October.
Behind every breast cancer diagnosis is a person with a story of challenges, decisions, treatment, hope and resilience. For Madam Barbara Dowuona, that journey began in January 2020 when she discovered a lump in her breast.
Initially, she went through several unproven treatment regimens before deciding to seek medical care at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Her decision to seek appropriate care marked an important turning point in her journey.
At Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Madam Barbara underwent surgery to remove the affected breast, followed by 25 cycles of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. She is now cancer-free and continues to receive hormone therapy.
Today, Madam Barbara has turned her experience into a mission to educate and encourage others. She advocates for breast cancer awareness in her community and wherever she finds herself. For her, the conversation should not be limited to October; breast health awareness and early action should remain a priority throughout the year.
Her story highlights the importance of seeking professional medical care when a breast lump or other unusual change is noticed, rather than relying on unproven treatments. It also reminds us that the journey may involve surgery, different forms of treatment, continued follow-up and the support of family, caregivers and healthcare professionals.
As the Society of Family Physicians of Ghana (SOFPOG) continues its October Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign under the theme “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” we celebrate Madam Barbara and all breast cancer survivors whose experiences inspire hope and encourage others to seek care.
Have you had your breasts examined? If you haven’t, make arrangements to have your breast health assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
Let us keep sharing survivor stories, challenging misinformation and supporting everyone affected by breast cancer—not just in October, but throughout the year.
Every Story is Unique. Every Journey Matters.
