The Society of Family Physicians of Ghana Presents October Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Introduction

October is widely recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when organizations, healthcare professionals, and communities around the world unite to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. This year, The Society of Family Physicians of Ghana (SOFPOG), has partnered with Pfizer, a global pharmaceutical leader, to embark on an enlightening journey through breast cancer under the theme, “Journey through Breast Cancer: Demystifying the Myths.” This collaborative initiative takes a three-pronged approach, encompassing a symposium, educational campaigns at outpatient departments (OPDs) in three teaching hospitals, and extensive media-based outreach, all aimed at dispelling myths surrounding breast cancer.

The Symposium – Shattering Myths with Knowledge

The cornerstone of this awareness campaign is a symposium that brings together healthcare experts, survivors, patients, and advocates. The theme for this event, to be held on the 19th of October, is ” The Journey Through Breast Cancer: Current trends in management.” It will provide a platform for open dialogue and information-sharing about breast cancer. Dr Priscilla Vandyck-Sey, Dr Florence Dedey and Dr Mary-Ann Quarcoopome will address common myths surrounding breast cancer, such as misconceptions about risk factors, treatment options (surgical and non-surgical), and outcomes. Stakeholders in the Health Sector in Ghana will also express their views on how they are helping in the fight against Breast cancer. Attendees will gain valuable insights into breast cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of a holistic approach to patient care.

Programme line up

Outpatient Department Campaigns – Bridging the Gap in Healthcare

SOFPOG and Pfizer recognize that community engagement is essential for effective awareness campaigns. Therefore, they will deploy educational teams to three teaching hospitals: Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Polyclinic Family Medicine Department, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s Family Medicine Directorate, and Tamale Teaching Hospital’s Family Medicine Training Unit. These teams will conduct breast cancer awareness campaigns at OPDs throughout October and offer free breast screening as well. They will provide educational materials, offer one-on-one consultations, and emphasize the significance of regular screenings and early detection. By reaching patients directly where they seek medical care, this prong aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access and awareness.

Nationwide Media-Based Outreach – Amplifying the Message

The final prong of this comprehensive awareness drive is a nationwide media-based campaign. SOFPOG and Pfizer will collaborate with print, radio, television, and social media platforms to disseminate accurate information about breast cancer. Specialized broadcasts and articles will debunk common myths and provide practical guidance on breast health, screenings, and the breast cancer journey. Additionally, a series of impactful social media campaigns will engage a diverse audience, encouraging dialogue and fostering a sense of community among those affected by breast cancer.

SOFPOG will be on various TV stations such as Joy Prime, GTV, Metro, Citi TV among other media houses.

Watch out for educational materials that you can download on our website and on our facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/Sofpog1 as well.

Conclusion

The Society of Family Physicians of Ghana’s partnership with Pfizer for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not only timely but also multi-faceted, aiming to demystify myths and raise awareness about breast cancer. By implementing a three-pronged approach involving a symposium, outreach in teaching hospitals, and a nationwide media campaign, we aspire to break down barriers to knowledge and access. Together, they are working towards a future where breast cancer myths are dispelled, early detection is common practice, and every individual touched by this disease receives the support and information they need on their journey through breast cancer. This October, join SOFPOG and Pfizer in the mission to create a world where breast cancer is understood, demystified, and ultimately defeated.
