SOFPOG’s POCUS Training Program for Emergency Obstetrics in Western and Savannah Regions (Western Region Training)
The Society of Family Physicians of Ghana (SOFPOG) has embarked on a project to enhance emergency obstetric care in the Western and Savannah Regions of Ghana. The project, funded by Grand Challenges Canada, aims to equip healthcare professionals with the skills to utilize Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) devices in emergency obstetric situations.
On January 20, 2025, the in-person training program kicked off at the Busua Beach Resort in Busua, Western Region. The official launch was graced by Mr. Jeremiah Tiimob, Deputy Director of Administration and Head of the Western Regional Innovation Desk, who represented the Regional Director of Health for the Western Region.
Over the course of the five day training program, selected midwives underwent intensive lectures and practical scanning sessions to maximize their skills with POCUS devices. The training program was designed to empower healthcare professionals to effectively utilize POCUS technology in emergency obstetric situations, ultimately improving maternal and fetal outcomes.
Beyond the rigorous training schedule, participants also had the opportunity to unwind and relax through recreational activities, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
SOFPOG extends its deepest gratitude to Grand Challenges Canada for their funding , and the Ghana Health Service, and Global Ultrasound Institute for their invaluable support and partnership in this project.
As the project continues to unfold, SOFPOG remains committed to enhancing the quality of emergency obstetric care in Ghana, one training program at a time.
